Effective communication is essential to meaningful development.
As new initiatives are conceptualized, planned and executed, many questions are asked and answered throughout the process. The quality of this communication interaction is what ultimately determines efficiency and effectiveness.
Private sector companies spend billions of dollars on communication every year.
They invest as much money in researching their audience, honing their message and planning their advertising as they do on product research.
In the development sector, available resources are channelled into technical research and development; the little left over is spread amongst ‘peripheral activities’, like communication.
The result is limited success and decreasing ability to attract much-needed resources.
Successful organizations communicate effectively by design. They build reputations for integrity, reliability and competence through the execution of comprehensive, audience-informed, communication strategies that:
complement technical activities and deliver relevant projectspromote efficiency
foster good relationships within the organizations, with partners and with clients
facilitate the timely achievement of core organizational goals
assess impacts and make adjustments to maintain relevance.
We complain that project funds are dwindling and there is less money available for communication. We fail to see that if we spend money on strategic communication we will achieve demonstrable impact, build awareness of the organization and its work, establish its credibility and reputation and attract more funding.
